Vertical turbine pump is a popular type of deep well pump, but most people don't know about it. To you, do you know what the structure of vertical turbine pump is?

What is vertical turbine pump?

The vertical turbine pump is a vertical shaft pump designed to be installed in a borehole. It can also pump open reservoirs, rivers, inlet structures or tanks, or can be installed in tanks for booster pump applications. The pump can have one or more impeller and diffuser bowls, depending on the overall head requirements.

They are commonly used for drilling to provide agricultural or lawn irrigation, or to provide water supplies to municipalities that rely on groundwater rather than surface water. They are also used to supply plant water and fire water to factories. Irrigation, drinking water supply, plant make-up water, cooling water, fire pumps, drinking water distribution, booster pumps, process pumps, etc.

What's the structure of the vertical turbine pump?

Vertical turbine pumps are available in open and closed impellers. The sleeve bearings in the pump diffuser bowl are lubricated by the pumped liquid. A vertical high-thrust motor is mounted on the top, a spindle bearing for product lubrication, or a submersible motor mounted below the pump to eliminate the spindle and spindle bearings.

Vertical turbine pumps are typically driven by AC electric induction motors or diesel engines through right angle drives. The pump end consists of at least one rotating impeller that is coupled to the shaft and directs the well water into a diffuser housing called a bowl.

The multi-stage configuration uses multiple impellers on the same shaft to produce the higher pressures required for deeper wells or higher ground pressures (heads).

The vertical turbine pump operates when water enters the pump at the bottom through a bell-shaped member called a suction hood. From there it enters the first stage impeller and increases the speed of the water. The water then enters the diffuser bowl directly above the impeller where high velocity energy is converted to high pressure. The bowl also directs fluid into the next impeller located directly above the bowl and the process continues through all stages of the pump.

After the water leaves the last diffuser bowl, it passes through a long vertical column as it rises from the wellbore towards the ground. The rotating shaft inside the column is supported at three or five foot intervals, and the casing bushing is mounted inside the column and is lubricated by water flowing through the column. At the surface is a pump discharge head that allows the flow to change direction towards the discharge tube. A vertical high thrust AC motor is mounted above the discharge head.

Tips for starting the vertical turbine pump buying process

1. Calculate the flow rate. You need to give the pump supplier - manufacturer or distributor - describe what the pump will do and the type of environment it will work with. Traffic is a good starting point. This is a measure of the flow and speed of traffic through the system. It is usually measured in gallons per minute (gpm) or liters per minute (lpm).

2. Calculate the total number of heads necessary. The total head is the pressure required for the pump to perform its job - whether it raises the liquid's elevated height or makes it resistant to pipe friction, providing pressure or any combination at the end of the system.

3. Describe the fluid to be pumped. Is it water or oil or something in between? More viscous liquids require more powerful and sometimes different types of pumps. What is a chemical? Acidic or corrosive liquids can damage certain pump materials. What is the temperature of the liquid? Does it contain solids? Are those solids fragile - just like the ingredients in ice cream or soup? Are they worn? If so, they may wear pumps made of the wrong material. Does the solid need to be shredded? Some pumps include a shredder mechanism.

4. Consider how to power the pump. Rather, you want to know where the power comes from, whether the pump is indoors or outdoors, and what material the pipe is made of.
