The rotating shaft inside the column is supported at three or five foot intervals, and the casing bushing is mounted inside the column and is lubricated by water flowing through the column. At the surface is a pump discharge head that allows the flow to change direction towards the discharge tube. A vertical high thrust AC motor is mounted above the discharge head.

Vertical turbine pumps are primarily used wherever submersible pumps are not available, as the flow is higher than the turbine's range, or because the owner prefers a conventional motor mounted on top of the pump.


They are commonly used for drilling to provide agricultural or lawn irrigation, or to provide water supplies to municipalities that rely on groundwater rather than surface water. They are also used to supply plant water and fire water to factories.
