Advantages and Disadvantages of Horizontal Pump

Advantages of horizontal design:

It can be directly connected to motors, engines or turbines.

For low suction pressure: you can choose the cantilever design. For high suction pressure: you can choose between bearings design.

You can obtain various nozzle configurations that match the external field pipelines, such as end suction top discharge and top suction top discharge.

Because of its low clearance requirement, it is suitable for almost all indoor applications.

Defects of horizontal design:

When the required net pump suction head (NPSH) exceeds the available NPSH, its application is limited.

It needs an auxiliary booster pump.

The maximum allowable operating temperature and pressure are usually much lower than those of vertical turbine pump.

Advantages and disadvantages of vertical turbine pump

Advantages of vertical design:

It requires less floor space than a horizontal pump.

Suitable for space with limited ground area.

NPSH can be increased by using vertical turbine pump

This pump is suitable for high temperature and high pressure fluid.

Disadvantages of vertical design:

They require a lot of installation and maintenance space, especially when it comes to multistage units or vertical turbine pump

The pump can only be used when it is directly connected to the motor. vertical turbine pump will not be the best choice for your industry to use engines or turbines and other types of drivers.

Because of the overhang design, it is difficult to balance the hydraulic axial thrust especially when dealing with high suction pressure.

Multistage vertical in-line pumps usually require expensive buckets and pits.

When it has to pump liquids with high dissolved gases, its mechanical seals will have various problems, because they will accumulate at the top of the sealing chamber or packing box. It is difficult and inefficient to vent here.

How to Choose between Horizontal Pump and Vertical turbine pump

The factors you should consider are:

1. Wind direction and speed.

In order to work properly, the horizontal axis turbine needs the wind to flow at right angles to the blade. If it blows out in a different direction from the direction facing the blade, the turbine gains much less energy from the wind. In order to adapt to the change of wind direction, the turbine has a deflection driver, which rotates the direction of the unit. However, the driver slowly adapts to the changing direction because it has to rotate the entire turbine and propeller assembly. In contrast, vertical turbine pump work well regardless of wind direction, so they are more suitable for urban areas with high-wind buildings where wind turbulence exists. The vertical axis is designed to operate at a lower wind speed than a horizontal turbine.

2. Wind Energy Efficiency.

Horizontal-axis turbines convert more wind energy into useful mechanical motion, because the blades are perpendicular to the wind direction, and the blades capture energy throughout their entire range of motion. In contrast, blades on vertical-axis turbines are inefficient, capturing energy from the wind only in the front; they drag on the system at the back of their rotation.

3. Mechanical complexity and stress

Horizontal-axis turbines are more mechanically complex than vertical designs because they require yawing mechanisms to adapt to changing wind directions. When the yaw mechanism turns to capture the wind, the gyroscopic action of the rotating blade of the horizontal axis turbine produces stress. Over time, the stress will cause the turbine blade and hub to rupture. Vertical turbine pump will not withstand this stress.

4. Suitable location.

High towers and long blades of horizontal turbines work well only in spacious spaces. Vertical turbine pumps are usually more compact and can be placed on roofs of buildings and other urban locations with fewer restrictions. The low elevation of the vertical unit is also applicable to areas where wind speeds rise between buildings or on the top of hills.

Conclusion

All the above points will definitely help you choose the right pump according to the specific requirements. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you understand the specifications and limitations of each type. If you want to buy a durable high quality deep well pump, the Nanjing Wangyang Pumps company has the perfect product.
